tools of the trade

We haven't been grilling much lately, so it took me a while to finally put my birthday grilling tools into use!

We've watched Return of the Jedi, so the boys are ready for The Force Awakens in December.

Level 3 Foundation sticker for Soren... improved racing dive for Anders...

...and a goodbye to Anders's swim teacher, Flavia, who graduated and is moving on to a weekday work schedule.

(Ok, I took some creative liberty with that last pic.)

Halmoni's Birthday Party

We played ukelele (accompanied by guitar and cello), including I've Been Working on the Railroad.

And Anders played Song of the Wind (and Happy Birthday).

We also played some Korean pop songs on violin and cello.

And, of course, we had cake.

(Actually, we had two cakes—a second one for Misah and Dylan's May birthdays.)

First Grade Science Fair

We started at the trilobite table, where we learned how to make trilobites out of modeling clay.

Here's one of the examples that first graders made ahead of time.

Anders showed us the Prehistoric Life book he made.

The classroom was full of activity.

Here's the spinosaurus Anders made...

...and the entire dinosaur menagerie the class made.

They made casts of bones and shells.

And, finally, sang and danced to "I am a Paleontologist" by They Might Be Giants!

Have you ever seen a Panda dance?

The entrance.

Out of many, many, many pictures, this is practically the only one in which it looks like Soren knows what he's supposed to be doing.

Well, ok, there's also these.

This shot is more representative. Note the purposeful movement of every child... except Soren.

In video form, you'll see Soren does move, albeit about a beat or two behind the group sometimes.

One of Anders's friends got him a bookstore gift certificate for his birthday, and we finally got around to using it. Anders went for the classics.

Stump Gin

Stump Gin, a new addition to our bar, courtesy of Gary & Elizabeth.

It's by Fermentorium Distilling—the same folks as Phillips Brewing Company.

Martini with a trio of olives.

It reminds me of Terroir Gin from St. George Spirits, but it's a bit smoother. Good in a martini or a G&T!

life in the big pool

This week, Soren's class spent a while longer in the big pool. And no life jackets this time!

In he goes...

They also tried going in goggle-free. Soren had his doubts, but he did it.

Finally, they tried riding noodle horses.

big pool!

Now that he's in level 3 of his swim class, I guess Soren gets to go in the big pool sometimes. Safety first, though.

Getting ready to jump...

...and Soren's in the water!

The big pool is a lot, well, bigger (30x60 ft versus 20x40), plus it has a deep end.
