New toy

I bought a Sigma 10-22mm wide-angle lens (equivalent to 15-33mm for a 35mm camera) for my Nikon D40. It's very wide, and shows a bit of distortion at the edges when it's open wide.

Farmers Market

We wanted to get a couple of knives sharpened, and there's a sharpening stand at the Farmers Market at the Ferry Building. They were full-up on orders when we arrived, so those knives remain dull. But it's never a bad thing to go to the Farmers Market.

We saw this cool new sculpture right next to the Farmers Market.

In advance of the 38th Annual Fungus Fair, they were showing off some mushrooms.

As we pretty much always do when we go to the Farmers Market, we stopped by Bluebottle Coffee for a latte.

And as we were leaving, the Ferry Building clock tower looked beautiful, surrounded by clouds and sky.

Skyline Chestnuts

I have a certain fondness for chestnuts. Indeed, I will go to great lengths for my roasted chestnuts. So when Sigrid read about Skyline Chestnuts, she decided secretly to whisk me there on our way back from Costanoa this weekend.

You walk down a path until you find some chestnut trees.

And then you find the chestnuts scattered about on the ground.

Most of them are just lying on the ground, looking just like chestnuts do, but some of them are still hiding in their husks.

After a while, you've collected a good bunch... like maybe seven pounds of them.

And was it worth it? Well, we haven't tried the chestnuts yet, so who knows if they are any good. But it sure was fun picking them.

Update (2007/11/25): The chestnuts are fantastic.

Costanoa / Pigeon Point Fresnel

After we decided to get married at Costanoa, a mere four miles away from the Pigeon Point Light Station, Sigrid volunteered there a few times. And she also learned that they light up the old fresnel lens once a year, in November, and so we decided to go this year.

The fog was heavy at Costanoa on Saturday morning.

We spotted some interesting flora after breakfast.

And then we walked down to the beach.

In addition to fog and surf, we found this slightly-past-his-prime guy on the beach.

Back at Costanoa, we spotted some more pretty flowers.

Saturday night, we went to the fresnel lighting. We weren't really sure what to expect. We certainly didn't expect to have to park across Highway 1, about a half-mile or so inland, and to be walking to the lighthouse along with a huge crowd. It was really quite an event. The police were out in force, for traffic control to prevent the pedestrians from being run over by cars that might otherwise be zipping by through the fog.

The lighthouse itself was spectacular. We really had no idea what we were going to see. Well, it looked something like this (I didn't take a picture myself, but found this Creative Commons licensed photo on the 'net):

Here's one last shot of from Costanoa.
