We hit the road for ten days this August. Down to Bakersfield for the night, then down to Los Angeles for the weekend for a Boaltie reunion. On Sunday afternoon, we drove up 395 to Lone Pine for an evening, followed by visits to Manzanar, a fish hatchery, and an art gallery in Bishop. We then spent the next five days in June Lake, exploring the area, followed by a long slog through Yosemite and back home.

We started on Thursday, August 4.
We spent the night at a Hampton Inn in Bakersfield, where Soren showed us his road trip dance.
The boys swam in the small pool out back, and then we went to Hodel's Country Dining for the buffet.
On Friday, we drove from Bakersfield to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Valencia, where we met the Boalties.
Then we drove down to Los Angeles, for a weekend Boalt reunion at the Paul Palace.

We spent Friday night, all of Saturday, and Sunday morning enjoying the Pauls' hospitality.
Sunday morning, we said goodbye to David and Russell Petersen. The rest of us then walked to the Larchmont Village Farmers Market, and to lunch at Pinches Tacos...
...followed by ice cream at Salt & Straw.
After that, we hit the road, by which I mean we went north on 395.
We bunkered at the Lone Pine Comfort Inn, and had dinner at the Mt. Whitney Restaurant, home of some very Western-themed decor.
On Tuesday, we visited the National Historic Site at Manzanar.
The National Park Service has put together a workbook for kids, which kept Anders and Soren interested enough that Sigrid and I got to check out the exhibits.
The Manzanar cemetery is marked by large memorial that was made by one of the internees in 1943.
The site is horrific in what it once was, but the vistas there are actually quite stunning.
After Manzanar, we had lunch at the Owens Valley Growers Co-op.
Soren is showing off the Junior Ranger badge he got by completing the workbook at Manzanar.
Lunch was followed by a visit to the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery.
After that, we stopped in Bishop to check out a gallery. Sigrid and I took turns checking out the gallery while Anders and Soren had frozen yogurt. (Sigrid had a Carrot Cake Bowl, which is carrot cake reimagined with Greek yogurt.)
Sigrid has wanted to check out 395 for a long time. And, I have to say, there are some amazing views while driving.
It got awfully sunny on Soren's side of the car, so we improvised a sun screen.
