Sunflower: Day 8

The Easter Bunny left a sunflower kit for the boys. The kit had a jute bag, some potting soil and six Russian Mammoth Sunflower seeds. We poured the soil into the bag, and rolled the bag down until it was just above the soil.

Next we slowly poured 3/4 cup of water into the soil, and planted our six seeds at a depth of about a 1/2 inch. Here they are on Day 1, right before we covered them.

We kept the jute bag inside near a south-facing window. Yesterday, we saw some sprouts. Today, we saw five sprouts.

When the sprouts get to about 3 inches, we'll pick the 3 or 4 most vigorous, and thin the rest away. That's probably about the time we'll plant the jute bag in the ground outside, too.

At a foot, we'll bring it down to 2 plants, and then at 2 feet we'll pick our hardiest stalk. We'll see how it goes.
