Costanoa: Monarch butterfly caterpillars

The garden outside the restaurant at Costanoa has a couple of milkweed plants, and that attracts monarch butterfly caterpillars. Monarch butterflies go through four generations every year, the first three of which are short-lived, and the fourth of which lives for months. That fourth generation is supposed to be born around September or October, and to emerge from a chrysalis as a butterfly about a month later. But we saw several monarch caterpillars in the milkweed—late bloomers?
