candlepin bowling

Candlepin bowling, a New England tradition (or so I hear). The pins are narrower. The balls are smaller and lighter. The downed pins are only cleared at the end of the frame. The scores are lower. (Wikipedia assures me that's true generally, rather than just us.)

Showing us how it's done.

Mother and daughter.

On his first try, Soren tried to shot-put the ball. To save the lane from complete destruction, I taught him how to bowl granny-style.

If you look closely, you'll see that on this shot Soren has managed a gutter ball (right gutter) notwithstanding the bumpers that are up to prevent that.

Anders gives it a try.

For the most part, the kids outscored the adults. (In the adults' defense, we didn't have the bumpers up in our lane.)
