209 Gin: Barrel-Aged Gin Tasting

209 is introducing two new "barrel reserve" gins (in the picture, flanking standard-issue 209 Gin). The one on the left is aged in cabernet sauvignon barrels. The one on the right is aged in sauvignon blanc barrels. To celebrate, 209 sponsored a cocktail competition at RN74. A colleague who is on the 209 mailing list got an email about this, and forwarded it to me, saying the event had my name written all over it. She was right.

Eight bartenders competed. The first two rounds were judged by 209 personnel, while the guest judges (enthusiasts like me) tried cocktails like this negroni made with the cabernet sauvignon barrel aged gin.

Second round.

The final head-to-head round was a three-course pairing with dinner, and the guest judges scored the drinks along with the 209 judges.

Once I figure out where it is being sold, I'm going to buy a bottle of the cabernet sauvignon barrel-aged gin—it was really tasty!
