Off the Grid

Sigrid had been wanting to try out Off the Grid, the "roaming mobile food extravaganza," for some time, and we finally made it out to the Haight edition.




Anders had a hijiki onigilly from the eponymous Onigilly (Sigrid and I thought this was pretty good, though Anders was more interested in my Orangina). Sigrid and I started off with tacos from Seoul on Wheels (verdict: good but not mind-blowing). Next, I picked up some fried mac and cheese (yes, really—they bread the mac and cheese and deep fry it, and it's fantastic) from Eat Curbside. Sigrid followed up with a chicken adobo banh-mi from HapaSF (pretty good), while I tried a pork belly baked bun from Chairman Bao (sinfully good). Finally, we all (well, except Soren) had cupcakes from Cupkates (very tasty, if more than a bit pricey).

Soren, meanwhile, mostly just hung out.


We stuck around for some music, too.

Last night we were having dinner at Grammy & Grandpa's place, and Anders suddenly asked, "What do you call a fire in your mouth?" No one knew the answer, except Anders, who explained that a fire in your mouth is a [wait for it] pacifier!

I've done a Google search for this joke, and haven't found any sign of it, so I think Anders made this joke up!

Baby Train

We've taken to sticking Soren in a car seat inside of a pack and play as a way of putting him down somewhere where Anders can't easily get to him. I call this the "germ cage" (yes, it would be more accurate to call it the "no germ cage" or some such, but it doesn't roll off the tongue as easily).

Anders is fascinated by the germ cage, no doubt because we keep telling him to leave it alone. We have, however, allowed him to use it as a "freight car" in a "train" that he's constructed.

Perhaps he was inspired by a book a friend gave him, New Baby Train.

Adjusting to being a big brother is a bit tiring. Or he's in the midst of a growth spurt. Or something.

But how could this possibly be a good idea?

We pushed the coffee table in, so that this wouldn't end horribly. But not before snapping a few pictures, of course.

Happy Birthday Grammy!

March 6th isn't Grammy's birthday. Maybe I'll explain that some time later.

But March 6th is when we had some braised short ribs that I spent HOURS defrosting and reheating in the oven (thank you Jessie et Laurent) on rice, herb-roasted fingerling potatoes, kale chips, and 2004 Ramey Claret wine.

Followed by a surprise birthday gift and cake.


Anders was more interested in the cake.


(Yes, I know, that's a lot of liquor in the background. Stocking up to deal with any issues the boys throw our way as they get older.)
